In July of 1942, the Germans began deportations from the Warsaw ghetto. In Warsaw, as elsewhere, there was widespread disbelief that deportation to the "east" meant death. However, slowly but surely, the truth became widely known. By the middle of September, the major deportation had ended, and until January there were no further acts. In January 1943, there was another "action," but this one was met with armed resistance and ended after four day with only 5,000 deportees. The remaining Jews in the ghetto then began to organize in earnest. When the Germans once again entered the ghetto on April 19, they were met with withering fire. The first day they were forced to withdraw. However, day by day, the Germans advanced, by burning down and blowing up nearly every building in the ghetto. It took weeks, but eventually the Germans completed the conquest of the ghetto. While the uprising in Warsaw was the largest and best known, there were revolts in many of the other ghettos as well as in the death camps of Auschwitz, Sobibor and Treblinka.
